Reflection: This activity is a fun, interactive way for students to use radicals in equations all while being active during class. The students will be engaged because it is a "friendly competition" with their peers on who can walk the fastest and which peer can be closest to their theoretical speed.
Description: This activity will take between two to three days to complete. The students will be completing two worksheets prior to the competition. The first worksheet will be using the biological formula to determine the walking speeds of different animals. The second worksheet builds off the first in which it is using the biological formula by comparing different different animals species to one another to see which is faster. Then we begin the walkathon championship where students will measure their own legs and use the formula to calculate their theoretical speed. Now, may the race begin. The students will grab a partner and one of them will be the the first participant and the other will record the time. Then they will switch. The student with the closest actual speed will be the winner!
